Lawless Receives Newspaper Endorsement!

posted by campaign on 8/30/2006
In Newsweekly, the first newspaper to endorse in this race, says Lawless is the "stronger and more impressive choice."
Jen has officially been endorsed by In Newsweekly, New England’s largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender newspaper. Their editorial endorsement reads:

Gay and lesbian Democrats in the state's 2nd Congressional District have a choice - incumbent Congressman Jim Langevin or Brown University Professor Jennifer Lawless. Langevin is a reliably pro-gay Democrat, so gays could do a lot worse than reelecting him. But in this race, there is a stronger and more impressive choice in Lawless.

Langevin does not support marriage equality, while Lawless does, telling In Newsweekly, "I believe in protecting civil rights and I think this is a civil right." (Although, to be fair, Langevin supports civil unions.)

As far as some core Democratic issues, however, Langevin is more conservative. He is anti-choice on the issue of abortion rights and Lawless has been critical of Langevin's initial support of the Patriot Act.

Over the past six years, Langevin has largely been a go-along-to-get-along Democrat, instead of an advocate for the gay community. Lawless promises to be such an advocate.

Jen is and always will a strong, outspoken advocate on issues from the war in Iraq, to a woman's right to choose, to the right to privacy, to real marriage equality. It's time for a real Democrat in Rhode Island's 2nd District!

Awesome!

It is so great to see the coherent argument put together on Lawless' behalf. Sure, Langevin has done an OK job in Congress for the past six years, but the fact is that he is wrong on a bunch of issues and is just not a leader when it counts. Marriage equality is the perfect example.

Let's elect a better candidate and the true progressive in this race!

We appreciate your support for the gay community, which is large and politically strong (ask the mayor of Providence!) here in RI. We recognize the genuine thing when we see it. Jim isn't it. He IS a go-along Democrat who plays it safe. Jen will standup to the Bush crime family. Pete

Yeah she did!

This is a great endorsement for Jen, in a paper that is read very widely in the LBGTQ community throughout the state and region. Jen will definitely be the better representative in this district!
