When I first started this campaign, the two most common responses I got were, "What are you thinking?" and a similar question with a strong swear word in it. I mean, no one takes on an incumbent in a Congressional primary. I didn't have connections in the Rhode Island "good old boys network." I didn't have rich friends with money to burn. And, to hear tell, I didn't have a chance.

But here's the thing: in a democracy, no one gets a free ride. Each and every citizen has not only the right, but the responsibility, to hold their leaders accountable. And, in the end, it's not the money or connections or incumbency that votes. People vote. And I knew that people wanted change.

Those who didn't think this was going to be a race were underestimating democracy. They were underestimating me. And they were underestimating Rhode Island.

I knew what Rhode Islanders knew:

At a time when President Bush and the Republican Party are the cause of too many of our problems, we already had too many Democrats enabling Republicans instead of fighting back against them. Too often, Democrats refused to challenge this President, refused to challenge the status quo, and refused to fight for what's right. What we need are Democratic leaders who will go to Washington and fight this administration tooth and nail.

And they knew this: if the Democrats we have won't do that, it was time to find some Democrats who would.

We didn't pick an easy fight. But sometimes, those fights are worth having. I want to thank each and every one of you for joining me in it.

The two biggest gifts anyone can offer to any project are your love, and your labor. I've been blessed with both -- a staff that worked harder and smarter than just about any around, and a set of supporters and volunteers that will probably still be knocking on doors tomorrow, just out of habit.

We must do better for America, and as Democrats, it is not enough just to support the same old Democrat. We need to choose real Democrats who will take our country in a new direction. I believe we are at the dawn of a new day, and we can choose to go in one of two directions. The first direction is familiar -- we can choose the status quo and continue to turn a blind eye to Democrats who do not support our party's values and principles. And in so doing, we will continue to leave Rhode Islanders behind.

Or, we can head in a new direction. We can hold ourselves, our candidates, and our leaders accountable. We can demand they hold true to justice, equality, fairness, and democracy. We can elect Democrats who will fight this President's agenda. We can create a higher standard for America, and a better future for Rhode Island.

This race may be over. But that doesn't mean any of us are excused from further duty. Keep fighting. America and Rhode Island need you.
